Rock musicians get one stage name and keep it for forty years. Rappers get a name, outgrow it, get a second from a producer, invent a third to play a character, then let the internet assign a fourth. Below are 40, sorted by origin, with the folklore labeled as folklore.

How Do Rappers Get Their Names?

Read a few hundred origin stories and the same six patterns keep surfacing. This is the working taxonomy.

The childhood name that stuck. The most common and least glamorous category. Somebody's mother, uncle or older cousin handed them a name at age six and they never escaped it. Snoop Dogg was Snoopy first. Gucci Mane inherited his father's nickname whole.

The alter ego. Not a second label for the same person, but a different character with a different voice. Nicki Minaj's Roman Zolanski has a hometown, an accent and a mother. MF DOOM built a career on the premise that the man and the villain were separate employees. If you can hear the change with your eyes closed, it is an alter ego.

The flex name. A luxury brand or status marker worn as a name. Saint Laurent Don. Cash Carti. Rozay. Nas Escobar. The grammar is almost always identical: an expensive noun plus a title of rank. It is a coat of arms, and it long predates the streetwear era.

The crew or label name. A name that only makes sense as part of a set. King Slime is meaningless alone and legible the moment you know the crew under it. Cactus Jack and 1017 work the same way: memberships more than identities.

The shortened government name. The simplest engine in the genre. Nasir becomes Nas. Kendrick becomes K.Dot. Chris becomes Ludacris. Kanye becomes Ye. It is the least romantic origin and by far the most frequent, which is why a surprising number of rappers' real names are already most of the stage name.

The mentor-given name. The best stories live here, because somebody else's judgment is baked in. Chuck D named Busta Rhymes after a wide receiver. Magoo named Missy Elliott after a minor crime. A producer named Fendi renamed Onika Maraj. These names are inheritances, and artists discuss them the way people discuss a grandparent's watch.

A seventh category deserves naming: the borrowed character. Rap has raided kung-fu cinema, Marvel comics, mob movies and video games since the 1980s. ODB, Method Man, MF DOOM, Kung Fu Kenny and Frank White are all, finally, people who watched something and decided that was them now.

Two artists are so deep into this they need separate accounting: Lil Wayne's alias collection and the many names of Drake are less a list than a filing system.

Why Is Snoop Dogg Called Snoop?

His mother called him Snoopy as a child because he looked like and loved the Peanuts character. Everything since extends that root: Snoop Doggy Dogg, then Snoop Dogg, then Snoop Lion in July 2012 after a Rastafari priest rechristened him in Jamaica, producing the 2013 reggae album Reincarnated. He has also recorded as Snoopzilla and DJ Snoopadelic, the latter a nod to George Clinton's Funkadelic. Nobody has renamed himself more and stayed himself more.

Why Was Biggie Called Biggie Smalls?

Christopher Wallace was already "Big" at Westinghouse High School, where he weighed 201 pounds. Belcalis Almanzar has a sister named Hennessy. People started calling her Bacardi, because siblings named after two liquors is a bit that writes itself. She told Jimmy Fallon in December 2017 that her Instagram account kept getting deleted, so she trimmed it: "I think it was Bacardi that had something to do with it. So I just shortened it to Cardi B."

He released the album Ye in June 2018 and announced that September it was becoming his stage name. His stated reasoning, given to radio host Big Boy, was theological: "I believe 'ye' is the most commonly used word in the Bible. In the Bible it means you." The claim is wrong. Chuck D of Public Enemy named him, and named him after George "Buster" Rhymes, a wide receiver who played in the NFL and CFL. Trevor Smith Jr. has spent more than thirty years as one of rap's most recognizable voices under a name lifted from a pro football roster by a man from another group. It remains the best argument for letting somebody else name you.

Why Is Missy Elliott Called Misdemeanor?

Magoo gave it to her while they were recording "Beep Me 911" for her 1997 debut, and his reasoning was a compliment disguised as a charge sheet. Elliott shared it publicly in August 2023 in a tribute to him: "I'm going to call you Misdemeanor because it's a crime to have that many talents." Thirty years of Misdemeanor records, and the origin is one friend being kind to another in a studio.

Russell Jones took his name from a 1980 Hong Kong martial-arts film starring Yuen Siu-tien, also released as An Old Kung Fu Master, whose alternate title is unprintable here. Method Man explained the name as meaning there was no father to his style, which is both a compliment and an accurate technical description: nobody had rapped like that before, and nobody has convincingly done it since.
